My name is Celina Grace Fontenot. I was raised in a small town on the coast of Galveston Bay called La Porte, Texas. I am the middle child with two brothers, which has taught me an invaluable lesson; to get what you want in life, you have to speak up. So, throughout high school I studied hard and applied for scholarships. Now, here I am as a third-year student at the University of Texas, double-majoring in English and print journalism.
I am a student of both the journalism school and the Liberal Arts Honors College, so writing and editing are as much a part of my life as breathing. In addition to my academic obligations I have remained involved in the honors organization, Gamma Beta Phi, as well as the University of Texas' Orange Magazine. During my first year at UT, I completed an independent study analyzing the advantages of small-farm sustainable agriculture under the direction of Robert Jensen. As I have progressed in my education, I have honed several new skills to aid my future career as a journalist such as: HTML coding, video recording and editing, creating photo slide-shows, and most importantly, how to convey information to the public in an appealing and direct manner. My heavy course loads have demanded I manage my time effectively and taught me how to be flexible and composed when working to meet deadlines.
When I graduate in the Spring of 2014, I hope to become a print journalist for a newspaper here in the heart of Austin and eventually progress my career to work as an international journalist for a renowned newspaper. My primary aspiration is to use my talents and skills to reveal the injustices occurring in our world, and provoke action for change in society.
During my free time you will probably find me sifting through newly released music or anxiously waiting to snatch tickets for my favorite shows, as music is a defining passion of mine. However, my guiding light has always been the echoing words of my mother, "Your life is not about you, it's about helping those who are not as fortunate as you." As a journalist I hope to do exactly that and use my life to change the lives of others.
